Harvard author, plagiarist?

on Wednesday, April, 26, 2006 6:19 AM

This makes me sad. On one hand, I have no sympathy for plagiarism. On the other, I cannot imagine the enormous amount of pressure one would have of a $500,000 writing advance at the age of 17. I got my writing break at 20, and it took me a year to write a 32 page comic. It was terrifying. Many of the projects I have found myself in have been terrifying. But the amount of money and press attention this girl received is so far beyond my experience... If this is indeed plagiarism, then it was wrong and I cannot condone it. But I think I could understand how it might happen. If that makes sense.

Another ill effect of the 10-second attention span pop-culture mentality we live with today.

Music stars are voted for rather than made. Few would know good literature if it fell on their heads.

And what the hell is it with book titles these days? The words go inside the book, not on the cover!!! where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

lol I wish I could publish something! Although I haven't actually finished a story yet >_>

But I read about this a few days ago I kinda feel sorry for her, but at the same time I find it ridiculous that they didn't catch it sooner. If someone can plagerize and get a $500,000 deal, then what's gonna happen to my story which as far as I know isn't plagerized one bit!

However I sorta feel for her. Hope she can get it back on track.abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

Well said Dave....

I found this to be rather interesting:
Viswanathan said she read McCafferty's books three or four times while in high school but didn't bring them to Harvard with her and didn't consult them while writing.

No wonder she accidentally 'lifted' words . It's ashamed that the publisher has so much money involved and simply has to stand by her.

Can't read the first article thanks to NY requiring a subscription. =(

But still... that's a pretty sad situation. I can see how this would happen... if a book managed to influence you in a way, some parts would probably end up being stuck in your head.'

Even then, when I was in high school, my classes strongly emphasised that plagiarism was WRONG and would result in an automatic F.

Kia: Cool. I'm a infamous mythological perfect User.

I honestly don't feel that much of anything is actually "original" and you can point at anything (book, movie, music) that nods its head to something else.

The trick is not outright stealing or using established or documented passages. It's not that hard folks. I think she did it on purpose.

I think you're right. But I think she was ill prepared to do anything else.

True. There has always been an inherent belief amongst youth that old = forgotten. And this is an attitude that has become more prevalent rather than less. Also, I have wonder how much the internet is responsible for this sort of thing? Plagiarism has become much more widespread in the classroom due to easy access to others work. How many times did this teenage girl plagiarize to get into Harvard? How many of her friends plagiarize as well? At what point does it seem like no big deal? Or at least an acceptable option?

I blame the over-abundance of non-needed movie remakes coming out.
