Traahn Wrote:I saw one of those Atari Flashbacks in the store here a few days ago and I was tempted to buy it. But then I noticed it maybe didn't have a slot for cartridges. Can you plug old cartridges in it? Or are you limited to only the number of cartridges it comes with? |
Technically, you are limited to the included games - around 40 of them. But for someone good with a soldering iron and willing to buy about $12 - $15 worth of parts, it could be modded to hold a cartridge port and run MOST of the original 2600 carts.
Yes, it's not 100% compatible. There are actually 3 versions of the console. Rev A was sold first and is still available at some Walmart - but it has bugs even on the included games (no voice in Quadrun). Rev B is sold everywhere else and has the voice problem fixed along with a few small bugs. Rev C should be out sometime in March and will fix even more bugs. Every revision is a little more compatible, but may never reach 100%.
That being said, rev A is supposedly 99% compatible.
Oh, and remember the pics I included with the lighted cart was a real 2600, not the flashback (for testing purposes). My flashback already looks radically different (bare circuit board in a beige computer case)...

The sticks do use the standard 9 pin, so they will work in all compatible systems. Some people like them less and have problems with the shaft unscrewing, but I don't have that problem and like the feel better than the originals. Plus, I can do my nifty mods...
