You can actually get it (and Zork II and III) for free now for the PC. It runs in a little command window. Pretty neat:

I seem to have a fondness for the HP Lovecraft inspired infocom title: The Lurking Horror.

Zork holds a very nostalgic place in my heart. Although, I don't think I ever beat it -- oh wait! I had the walk-thru and *did* beat it!! But Zork I, II and III are near and dear to me. No real reason -- just that I played so many video games growing up that many of them are great memories.

There was another text-based one I had for the IBM PC, Jr. called "Zyll" and that was a great text-based game. It had more real-time action than Zork and could be played with a friend. A friend and I would play 2-player (using different parts of the same keyboard) and work our way through that adventure. I think Zyll might be a free download somewhere. It should be a really small download, as were all of the games in the 80s You should try it, josh.exe, if you're somewhat interested in this stuff. I downloaded it a while back and seem to remember it maybe being hard to figure out the set-up (keyboard, etc.), but once you do, it was just like the old days. I can't remember if the 2-player could be co-operative gameplay, competitive or both; but we had lots of fun with it.

EDIT: Okay, just loaded up Zyll again. Ideally you should change your screen resolution to 800x600 or 640x480 because it plays in a little DOS-like window. Lowering your screen resolution will make the window be bigger and fill up more of the screen for better immersion, imo.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pillwhere to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

Yep... Zork was a really cool computer game back in it's day.

Activision (I think) made my all time fav Zork game called, Zork: Nemesis. Very clever game.

I remember when MUD games were kinda big in the mid 90's. Do people still use MUD clients? I'll have to look into it.

Dave,

I am assuming that you're in the QA area then for video game development?

I am a software developer, and although I don't want to mention my company by name, I have always thought that our QA processes need to be VASTLY improved. I work on fixing bugs and let's just say I am in no danger of losing my job because of lack of work.

I have always thought that the QA process in console video game development must be somewhat extensive given that when a CD goes out you don't have the ability to patch it that easily (if at all). I have mentioned that to people here who usually give me silly looks, but with the amount of video games I have played and the bugs I have encountered (next to none) means that QA must be one HELL of a job for game development.

Do you have much experience with the console end of things, and if so can you clue me in on some of the processes that go into testing a game?

It's not radically different from any other testing process. Builds come in, get swept for bug per a test plan. Then you go into the normal cycle of regress, test, report. The big differences in Console are, as you noted, the low tolerance for bugs, and the Technical Requirements Cehcklists of the various companies.

Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft Xbox all have very stringent requirments for delivery of code that will work on their systems.

A large part of the focus in a QA effort for consoles is aimed at passing these criteria. Your goal is to get through first pass, but few do. A lot of gaming companies have first party testing teams who focus purely on vetting this area of a game.

It's the console equivalent of a compatibility sweep in a PC game. You are ensuring you support all of the platforms your game might be played on.

In my current job, we have our internal standards, the JAVA or BREW criteria for the phones, and then Carrier Standards that must be met for every phone. It's like taking the worst of PC and the worst of Console and putting them together. It's a real bitch sometimes.

We're getting it down to a fine scieince, but it is amazing how much things vary from carrier to carrier and phone to phone even.

It's what keep it interesting. If you want to learn more about console testing, get ahold of the TRC checkists for each major platform. It's not light reading, but if you really want to know, that's the place to start.

One of the first games I ever played on the computer was Return to Zork. It was pretty difficult, so I had to use the guide.

I worked on Return To Zork, Zork Nemesis and Zork: Grand Inquisitor for Activision. I love those games. The first Text Adventure I ever tried on a PC was Zork.

Zork Nemesis was excellent. It was better than Myst in that you could rotate the scene 360 degrees. The music was AWESOME. Some of the puzzles were a little hard though. I got stuck in the Insane Asylum. The artwork was fantastic, though. Much better than Myst games, for sure.
