Spielberg and EA Collaborate

on Saturday, October, 15, 2005 12:58 AM
I think this is cool news. I like Spielberg's creativity in the movies he's made. Is neat to see him involved with video games,...

Spielberg and EA CollaborateWill there be an EA ET on the horizon?
October 14, 2005 - Academy Award winning director Steven Spielberg has signed an agreement with Electronic Arts to develop three original gaming franchises in direct collaboration with the company's Los Angeles studio. The long-term deal which begins later this year will involve Mr. Spielberg working directly with the development teams at EALA to create new intellectual properties that will be owned by Electronic Arts.

Mr. Spielberg stated that he has "been playing EA games for years and has watched them master the interactive format." The acclaimed director went on to state that he has "a great deal of respect for for EA's understanding of the interactive format."

Industry analysts view the arrangement as a positive step for EA in bolstering its library of self-owned intellectual properties - an area of weakness for the publisher that currently relies heavily on licensed material for its success.

This new collaboration represents only the second time that Mr. Spielberg has been directly involved in game development. His only previous direct venture into the world of interactive entertainment was his role as storywriter for the LucasArts adventure game The Dig.

While no further information on the nature of the new games is available at this time, you can be assured that we will keep you up-to-date on this interesting development in the world of interactive entertainment.

That's the problem when they try to make video games out of movies that can't be made videogames.

Now, if EA would just stop treating its employees and customers like crap: then maybe I would find this news exciting.

Well, I doubt it would be E.T. I'm sure he wouldn't hand that license over to EA. That would be similar to Lucas handing Eidos the rights to Star Wars. The way I read it, he'll be helping to make new stuff for EA to have:

will involve Mr. Spielberg working directly with the development teams at EALA to create new intellectual properties that will be owned by Electronic Arts.

I've just always been impressed by Spielberg's contributions to film. He helped make such 80s classics as:
-Goonies
-Back to the Future
-Gremlins
-Amazing Stories
-E.T.
-Twilight Zone: The Movie
-Poltergeist
-Indiana Jones

And has contributed to some other stuff I've enjoyed:
-A.I.
-Close Encounters of the Third Kind
-Saving Private Ryan
-The Haunting
-Jaws

...And I just found out from imdb.com he helped create the Medal of Honor video games.
