movie award shows aren't always a load of rubbish. sometimes they actually give out the awards to movies that deserve them, even award shows that i hadn't heard of untill 3 minutes ago.
for example, my favourite movie, Ghost in the Shell [tron is a close second] won two awards at the 1997 World Animation Celebration Awards, including "Best Theatrical Feature Film" and "Best Director Of A Theatrical Feature Film" it probably got a few more, and if not it deserves more.
and the lord of the rings movies, i don't think we get a feed of the oscars over here, but i believe just one of these racked up about 12 oscars? correct me if i'm wrong.
it's true, a lot of the time movie [and music, for that matter] awards tend to go to the piles of rubbish. i took one look at the synopsis for Million dollar baby and thought "what the hell is this?", but sometimes, not often enough, good movies are recognized as good movies.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pillabortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion words of wisdom from...

Oscar winning films that I think SHOULD have gotten Oscars:
Gladiator (I frickin' love this film - however, in 2000, I'd have rather seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon win - but it did win Best Foreign Language Picture)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (clean sweep, and deserving of every bit of it)
The Silence of the Lambs (I dare anyone to disagree - this film set the standard for current horror/supsense/thriller films and is one of the finest overall movies ever produced by the mainstream Hollywood system)
Films that shouldn't have one Oscars but somehow did:
Annie Hall (great film, but better than the original Star Wars? Methinks not!)
Gandhi (great film, but better than E.T.? Methinks not!)
Ordinary People (ehh...good film, but better than frickin' Raiders of the Lost Ark or Raging Bull - sorry, but that is the best Scorsese film....period? Methinks not!)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (GREAT film, but better than frickin JAWS??!!?? Me majorly thinks NOT!!!!)
Braveheart (good film, not my favorite, but better than Apollo 13 or even Babe? Methinks not!)
Forrest Gump (great film, but better than The Shawshank Redemption, Quiz Show, Pulp Fiction, Hoop Dreams or Ed Wood? NO FRICKIN WAY METHINKS!!!!)

The bad thing about awards in general, is it takes only one bad choice to taint the awards for those who deserve it. I am sure everyone here can think of a workplace example of that happening.
People watch the awards shows because it's like watching any competition. They want those they love to win. When they do they're somehow validated.
What I would like to know is the criteria and the way the awards are chosen. If one of the main criteria is "Because we felt like it" then I guess I can't hold the Oscars in contempt for their choice, now can I?
One thing I do find interesting is so far no one has disagreed with me on my rant against Million Dollar Baby.
I watched Kung Fu Hustle last night. Even that was better than MDB.

What does having syphillis and washing your hands continually, and burning your clothes and dancing madly around a fire, have anything to do with adding the dancing and insanity, but nowhere in the movie is there reason? just so the ratings would be better.... who cares.
I would notice things like that before I said it was worthy of such an award. Atleast it showed the disease the government brings to the table.where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online |

Actually Jademz, that was a joke on my part. I meant it to seem like *I* was doing those things, but without disease.. thus making it seem like I too was also........ah screw it....If I have to explain it then it tanked.

It seems to me that one of the purposes (which may not have begun this way) of the awards has at least become the entertainment industries best attempt at suggesting what we should think are movies we're supposed to like. Ticket sales and popular polls mean nothing to them, it's all the direction they'd like to lead the public by the nose to believe are superior films. It's actually quite bombastic, nearly implying we as the public are too stupid to know what we should like.
The awards are meaningless to it's very core. Contests over something that cannot be certainly measured and is rooted solely in personal preference is no more significant than elementary school class favorites chosen by the teacher instead of votes from the students. The nuttiness and insignificance of the product is surpassed only by the means of attaining it. And the goofiness of the holding of such a massive self-petting ceremony is surpassed only by the public's being captivated by it.
One of the most interesting things I learned about the actual ceremony is that there are paid personel who's job it is to sit in seats of actors who are away from their seats, to keep the tables perpetually filled in appearence. Am I the only one who thinks this is totally inane?
Another thing was what one of the contributors to Tron said on the documentary DVD, that the effects were considered "cheating" and unworthy of any kind of award category. And the acadamy views itself as ahead of the game in analyzing great films? They're out of step and their opinion is not only merely another opinion, but a lesser one than someone chosen at random off the street if you ask me.
The whole thing is a waste of time, but I suppose everyone who digs it has time, interest and attention to spare. Oh well, I suppose if the public wants it and the entertainment industry wants to give it, who am I to not like what I see?
