I would? I've certainly seen that image before yes and I believe it dates back to the movie, i.e. well before TRON:Killer App. As redrain85 mentioned I always assumed it was an early concept CGI rendering of the Tank but I don't have any personal knowedge of who made it. I think it may be on the DVD. Off to check...

I'm definitely wrong. It's not in the Killer App teaser. I just checked the low res video clip we have here on TS and it's not in it.
I don't recall what it is from.

Just check the 20th Anniversary DVD. Yes, its on it. Put in the second DVD. Go to Design, Select the vehicles, then select tank, and its on the 3rd of 4 pages in the top right hand corner.
I'm pretty sure this dates back to the delelopment of the movie but as to who made it I simply don't know. Dave, some of your contacts might know more about that rendering.

Just checked here:
http://www.tron-sector.com/gallery/default.aspx?do=gallery§ion=1&category=4&group=Tanks
That states MAGI made the image and after looking at it closer I'm pretty sure it's right. Look at the shadow of the tank. See the sharp 90 degree bends produced by the shadow of the rounded parts. That's what the shadows in the movie look like too. Also the grid patern fades off to white like the game grid animations in the movie do which MAGI made as well. If this were a mondern immage odds are those shadows would be rounded and the grid would fade to black unless someone really went far out of there way to copy the effects seen in the movie. I believe this image was produced with the same software MAGI was using to make the tank and light cycles seen in the movie.
Still if someone knows more of the history of this render I'd like to hear it. For example who designed that tank?

I'll send Richard Taylor an email and see if he knows. He was deep into that group during the filming, so he'd be our best bet. DaveTRON

Richard Taylor (Visual Effect Supervisor on TRON) said:
"The picture is from the commercial for 20th Century Fox's video game.... "Worm War One". It was one of the first pieces I created right after Tron at the newly formed west coast office of Magi where I was Creative Director. It won the first Cleo Award ever given for Computer Animation. I have a copy of the spot. I'll look for a Qtime and send it off to you. It was a pretty cool spot at the time. Cya down the trail. Richard. " |
And there you have it. Not TRON, but TRONish in appearance. Anyone familiar with that game? I'll post the spot once I get it form Richard. DaveTRON

Cool... I can't wait to see the spot.
I'm not familiar with Worm War One. For a moment, I was thinking I remembered something called Worm Wars but after a little digging what I was thinking of is called Corewars. However that's not really a video game per say. Its more of a programmer's equivalent of Battle Bots. You can read a little bit more about it here:
http://www.koth.org/info/corewars_for_dummies/dummies.html
Scientific American had many great articles about this topic years ago. The thought of two programs battling it out for their very existance always put TRON images in my head. I could very easily see an image like that getting used to advertise something like Corewars. It makes me interested in finding out more about Worm War One.
Thanks for the info Dave and Richard,
Carl

Worm War One was a game for the Atari 2600. Back in the day I remember having some fun with it as a kid, but when I look back it's not that exciting. Your vehicle (a few blocks evidently representing a tank according to this pic) was in constant forward motion at the bottom of the screen, however you could vary the speed from slow to stupidfast, by pushing and holding the joystick forward or back for acceleration/deceleration. Left and right would control your horizontal position so you could avoid obstacles and aim as the screen continuously scrolled along. Waves of worms would appear moving like fast inch worms back and forth across the screen, which you had to shoot, of course. Along with the worms, obstacles (blocks) were scattered randomly about, and they could be shot to clear a safe path through before you crashed into them. There was a time limit counting down, that represented fuel, which could be replenished by moving your 'tank' into a fuel station which would sometimes appear with a new attack wave of worms. Shooting the fuel station was bad, because you'd lose the chance to refuel, but I believe it also killed all the worms on the screen. One strategy we used to use was to go slowly, shooting at the worms, and clear a path to the fuel station and then go as fast as possible to the fuel station, then slow down quickly and hope we didn't hit anything.
There are much better games for the 2600 that should be played before this one. It looks like that video clip might be cool (I don't remember the ad for the game).
