New Robotech series coming soon

on Saturday, May, 07, 2005 11:11 PM

For the true blue anime fans out there, I don't want to get into a debate about how good or bad Robotech was. A lot of anime "purists" hate this show. But I have nothing but fond memories of it, and it did after all introduce myself and many others to the world of anime. So let's give it at least some credit.

At any rate, this favorite show from my younger years is set to make a comeback.

Robotech is poised to become a series of its own: with new original animation by the studio DR. Movie, that did animation for Macross Plus. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the show's original broadcast, and we finally get a continuation two decades later. It's about friggin' time.

If you want to see what the original series was like, visit www.robotech.com. And if you want to see what the new series is going to be like, then check out www.shadowchroniclesnews.com.

EDIT: Thanks Compucore. Fixed the links. Sorry.

Oh yeah, before I forget . . . aside from the majority of the original voice actors coming back to reprise their roles, it's been confirmed that Chase Masterson (Leeta from Deep Space 9) and Mark Hamill (The Joker and Luke Skywalker himself) will be doing voices in the new series. How cool is that!

Here's a shot from a video clip teaser that was released.

Thats kewel to know. Redrain. Can you double check the linkage of the two links there one more. I clicked on both of them there. But it seems like it is still trying to include tron-ector.com in there and the link you want to show there. Just go through the edit and look to see if there was an error or something there. It could be just something minor there.

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

Okay, here's an update on the return of this series . . .

A trailer was just released on the Internet, showing some segments of the new pilot movie. (It's decent quality, but was taken using a camcorder at a convention.) The movie will be a 90 minute DVD coming out by the end of this year.

If you have a dial-up modem, you may want to skip downloading the trailer . . . it's 50 MB in size. You'll definitely want to use a download manager for this. The file is in .WMV format, so you'll need a recent version of Windows Media Player to watch it.

If you don't feel like downloading a huge video file without getting an idea of what to expect first, check out these two links for some screenshots from the video.

Wow... thanks for the links redrain85. I'm a very big Robotech fan. In particular I like the Mospeada and Macross parts. But I feel the same way about Robotech that you do. I've been a member over at MacrossWorld since the beginning and I find it ironic I came across these links here first. I'm sure they are over there too but I try to avoid the Robotech treads as they can get so heated.

Thanks and I'm certainly looking forward to this DVD,
Carl

Yeah, even though I've seen the original series unedited and in Japanese: I don't automatically hate Robotech because of that.

If you guys thought this clip was good . . . the trailers shown at the conventions were even better. In terms of animation quality, there's no need to worry. It looks VERY slick. Not surprising, since the same studio that's doing Yukikaze is woriking on Shadow Chronicles.

Same here. I've got Robotech on DVD. But I also have Macross and Mospeada on DVD unedited and in Japanese. I'm not that big a fan of Southern Cross. I don't understand the Japanese but the subtitles sure help.

As a side note I've got both Speed Racer and Mach GoGoGo on DVD too. Its fun to compare the differences. It's also interesting to note I've never seen the hatred expressed toward Speed Racer that I've seen directed at Robotech. I never quite understood that but I don't really care to either. Life is too short to get caught up in those arguements.

When I saw Southern Cross and Mospeada in their original forms, I was actually shocked at how little had changed for Robotech. I'd always been led to believe that the original footage and storylines had been mercilessly butchered. Not so.

Sure, there were changes and some nudity and violence had been cut out. But the storylines essentially remained intact. Also, the music and dubbing held up pretty well against the original soundtracks.

Macross is the only part that had significant changes. I can see why some fans might be upset over that. But in the end, the dubbed version wasn't really that much different than the original either. Overall, it still remained pretty faithful to the source material.

As a side note I've got both Speed Racer and Mach GoGoGo on DVD too. Its fun to compare the differences. Yes, I don't quite get that myself. But I sympathize with them, to a degree. For example: when the new Battlestar Galactica came out, I was all prepared to hate it.

But then after watching it for a while, I completely changed my mind and embraced it. Even though there were changes, I personally felt the story was very compelling and it was a quality show. Despite the negative issues I had with all the changes, the storyline overcame that.

It could have been the same for that proposed Tron "remake". Maybe I would have liked it. But only if the story was really, really good. And somehow I really, really doubt it would have been. At least in BSG's case, you knew that Ron Moore might have had something good up his sleeve. He wrote most of the good TNG and DS9 Trek stories. Meanwhile, in the case of the Tron remake, the scriptwriters had a very dubious history of writing credits.

Hmm, wandered off topic a little bit there. Heh.
