Disney Remaking Tron
Disney has hired screenwriters Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal to fashion a remake of Tron, the 1982 film about a computer programmer who gets sucked into the parallel world of a computer program, Variety reported.
The original movie, written and directed by Steven Lisberger, was considered ahead of its time. Klugman and Sterntha (Warrior) feel that the world has caught up with Lisberger's original concept, making it ripe for redo, the trade paper reported.
Sternthal told the trade paper that the new conceit is that the computer programmer gets trapped in a cyberworld, so that the film can utilize the Internet.

Amazing. Why didn't we think of it sooner?
Update. here's the Variety article..
I'm pasting it here, since it can be read from the main site with a simple "free trial" subscription. I wouldn't if it were premium content.
Disney has hired screenwriters Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal to fashion a remake of "Tron," the 1982 film about a computer programmer who gets sucked into the parallel world of a computer program.
The original pic, written and directed by Steven Lisberger, was considered ahead of its time, from its fixation with computer programming to its cutting-edge rotoscope graphics. Klugman and Sternthal, who just wrote the historical epic "Warrior" for Gavin O'ConnorGavin O'Connor to direct and Icon to produce, feel that the world has caught up with Lisberger's original concept, making it ripe for redo. It will be supervised by Brigham TaylorBrigham Taylor.
"It was remembered not only for story, but a visual style that nobody had ever used before," said Klugman, who recalls dumping many quarters into the arcade game spawned by the film. "We are contemporizing it, taking these ideas that were ahead of the curve and applying them to the present, and we feel the film now has a chance to resonate with a young audience."
Sternthal said the new conceit is that the computer programmer gets trapped in a cyberworld, so that the film can utilize the Internet.
"In a lot of ways, ('Tron') was a movie about a man venturing into hell. Our job will be to keep the humanity as he ventures into an unreal world."
The scribes take the job as they near an end to writing "Black Cat," based on the 1940s Harvey comicbook character of a stuntwoman who becomes a vigilante on the streets of Los Angeles. Michael Uslan produces the pic to be directed by Chuck RussellChuck Russell.

ok, now:
1. this should be moved in the "movie sequel" forum, and
2. if it's true, and they're keeping Steven Lisberger out of this, they're friggin' [CENSORED]
NTH EDIT: don't miss the comment of Harry Knowles on AICN:

I'm tired of editing the above post so I guess I'll reply to myself (also to let everyone quote freely from it).
I guess harsh words will be said, as it is natural when some never-heard-before writer start messing with a decades old fandom.. Now, aside from the apparent fact that they're ignoring Tron 2.0, I was bemused by the "descent to hell" remark. Whoa. It never occurred to me. If I had to think about Disney movies with this idea, i would mention "black hole", or even bloody "Snow white and the seven dwarves", before Tron.
Now I wouldn't mind a darker, more action/horror oriented Tron.. I mean, daemons, giant worms, viruses, and zombies are the stuff of Internet too. Expecially zombies- I would sell my soul for a "dawn of the dead/Tron" crossover (in a manner of speaking). And let's not forget the quintessential source of evil, the Necronomicon- they really should find some way to implement it.
I hope it sounds obiouvs, but I'll say it out loud.. Guys, I'm only (half-)joking, trying to look at the bright side. God knows I would prefer a "scary because it's horror" Tron remake to a "scary because is crappy" one.

To say I'm nervous about this is an understatement. As with anything there is huge potential to be totally successful or totally fail.
My fear is of the latter, of course. Keeping Lisberger out of it is the worst part, though. He should so be either (a.) directing it or (b.) producing it so that his influence is felt in the creation of the film.
I guess we'll all be keeping our eyes pealed for new word on this development.
Brings new light to the phrase "Be careful what you wish for," huh?

I'm rooting for them to do a great job. I hope they dont make this a 'kids' film. Getting the younger audiance is great and all but it sometimes it seems that studios overly dumb down the content or add something like a jar-jar *shivers to get kids to see their movie. I hope the writers consult a variety of geeks to get all of the details right. Tron and tron 2.0 contained a lot of interesting details, without bogging down the content, and it gives fans a chance to debate over things for months or years to come.... just look at how busy the sector still is Good luck disney, take your time, and do this thing right.

BWAHG! *Bangs header against keyboard while screaming "no! no! no! no! no! no! no!"*
Remakes can be good but I have the feeling that it would be dumbed down and sexed-up like Alias. This is going to scare me.
The question is why keep Steve out of this? It's really kinda stupid if you ask me.

Dumb question: Why is everyone assuming they're keeping Steven out of this? Neither article I read said they were, and AICN, as far as I can tell, jumped to the same conclusion without any supporting facts.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

Horrible, HORRIBLE NEWS. My worst fear come true.
We don't need a remake. Tron is timeless and a classic. If they're going to make another Tron film, do something new and not a rehash. What is it with Hollywood and remakes these days?
While the articles don't specifically state Steven is not involved, you can bet he isn't.

Good God. This is the last thing I would expect to happen...
I wouldn't be a huge fan of a Tron remake, but providing it was done well, I would be very excited about it- providing Mr. Lisberger would be involved.
Otherwise...

This is not the news that I was hoping to hear. I'm just as dissapointed as many others are.
Steven should be involved somewhere, which isn't to much to ask.
I looked on IMDB, the only other credit this writing team has is a movie that doesn't appear to have been made yet called "Warriors".
If Disney were going to move ahead with a TRON movie, it should have been a sequel NOT a re-make in any way or form. My feeling is that Disney have some other plans for the TRON franchise, but they can't execute those plans without getting TRON to the form that they need it to be in to maybe do numerious sequels or something along those lines.
And some communication with the fan base would have been nice. Ok TRON doesn't have as many fans as Star Wars does but there's enough of us out there. But what does Disney care about fan opinion when there's $$$ involved.

Agreed. I'd prefer a sequel, not a remake.
Disney has disappointed me, yet again. >:/ (Found out that they released a dvd set of a tv series but won't even put the ending on it! The ending will show up on another dvd set of a different series as a bonus feature. Ugh.)
