Home Automation

on Sunday, December, 19, 2004 1:08 AM
I have an interesting question for the programs around here. Do any of you know what x10 is?

If you do not, it's a cheap way (as in about $10 a unit) to set up an automated home. Such as controlling lights with remotes, setting things up to turn on and off at specific times, etc.

The reason I'm bringing this up here is I'm putting the finishing touches on a beta product I'm rolling out in January called 'iHome: Interactive Home' that works with the x10 devices and lets you control them no only by remote, but with your VOICE (read: MCP).

I'm setting it up to allow Users to create their own 'personas' that they interact with.

An Example:

User: "Master Control?"
PC: "Yes?"
User: "Can you turn off the kitchen lights please?"
PC: "Yes"
User: "Thank You"
PC: "End Of Line"

Post in this thread if anyone:
A) already uses x10 or
B) I've just peaked your interest in it.

I'll be revealing some pics of the program probably after Christmas.

NOT exactly like the clapper heh. More like a control box that you plug into any device that your computer is then able to control.

The clapper did have a nice jingle though

Is it wireless? Also, does it have the security feature of recognizing only certain voices?

I'm running x10 on bunch of things, have automated window blinds and everything. I dont have voice control yet, but i might add that in at some point. Just having ir control is really nice. Its an inexpensive and fun way to to automate your home. x10 doesent always work in older homes due to the dated wiring. But for most people it should be okay.

Yeah I heard of the X10 before. It wsa also for the Mac as well as for the Apple computers way back when. I remember seeing it at Addisons up over ehre where you an control a whole bunch of things. I thought I woudl geton sooner or later. Never really bother to get on yet. How are they by the way. I know they can be hooked up to the computer. Are they windows complient if you can hook them through that way??

2 Legit 2 quit

End of line

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

Their are computer 'links' you can buy that allow you to control the units though a pc. I have a usb device and am able to dial into my home server and change my house settings...or if im on vacation, have the lights and blinds act as if i was home (turning on and off through different rooms, opening and closing the curtains). The fun thing about a modular system like x10, you can easily grow the system without huge wiring costs. Just add another item when you have a spare $20 and 20 min of time.

Here are a few sights that have the x10 stuff:

http://www.x10.com/The main site for x10 stuff, but it's a little on the overkill side in terms of advertising. Yet it's the place to go for basic kits. You can get the pc controller for as little as $50 and units to plug lamps into average around $13

http://www.smarthome.com/Far more things for home automation (beyond x10). But also included kits for what kmon talked about (automated blinds, etc).

iHome (my software) will support the Activehome Pro Interface (CM15A) as well as the Firecracker and original ActiveHome (CM11A)>

kmon you up for testing a different peice of software? And what are you using now?order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

Bah! Now I'm jealous! You just HAD to show me something that cool. I guess now you can ask the MCP to turn off the lights for you and cook stewed oranges (okay. I was joking with the oranges.) You can definately say my interest in peaked (Pretty much most new and cool electronic things do this to me. ^^;; )

Auric, now im using activehome but im thinking of switching to a few linux open source apps since i can modify them when i get more ambitious. I'm working on a way to have an automated masking setup...still not sure exactly how i am going to pull it off. Bascily I have a projector and a screen, multiple types of media have different aspect ratios (4:9, 16:9 yadda yadda), I'd like to be able to simple play a clip through my media pc and have the screen automask for whatever ratio the clip is. I have a few ideas...but havent done serious experimenting with it, anyone else have any ideas?order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

I've been meaning to get into this topic. This is an area of life I am fascinated with. I have considered investing some time into training myself on it and trying to shift my work life into this arena and out of gaming.

I love the idea of complete control of your environment from wherever you are.

The picture I get in my mind is someone breaking into my house while I am away, and I am able to lock down my house remotely via PDA and secure the burglar in a locked room and then remotely guide the police to him without leaving the meeting I am sitting in. I want that world.
