He's sort of the movie reviewer equivalent of the guy from IBM who claimed computers would never be smaller than a house and would never be of interest to consumers.

This is the sort of crap the team had to deal with though. I think they got a very raw deal from a lot of people who didn't care or didn't get it.

Well, let's also be honest and say that calling Rex Reed a film critic is like calling the Pope a serial killer. It's not true.

Reed is one of the worst, self-indulged "critics" to ever put pen to paper. How he EVER got a job reviewing movies is beyond me.

What a hack. And to admit that he has no idea about the source material and then go and attack a film based on that just shows what useless ego he really is.

Just remember that Roger Ebert showed Tron (in 70 mm glory) at his "Unappreciated Movies Festival". He gets it!abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

"Can they really be planning future movies made by robots in which computers will replace both conventional animation and live action?"

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ha ha haaaaa haa ha haa haaa!

Haaaaaa haaa haaaaaaa haaaaaaa haaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Oh man - THAT was a GREAT laugh!

I really laughed out loud reading that - I mean REALLY LAUGHED OUT LOUD!

How can that not make you laugh?

This guy must have retired a few years later... when JUST that (the quote above) happened!

Good call, Rexxie ma-boy, good call - "pointless gimmicks" and "TRON is a folly that could appeal only to crackerjack eggheads and computer scientists".

I was 11 years old when I saw TRON in '82. I understood the WHOLE film and LOVED it! Not a bit of it (forgive the pun) was over my head. Oh... wait a minute, I guess that makes me a "crackerjack egghead" because I'm certainly no "computer scientist".

I wonder if Rex still does movie reviews. If so... dare I ask, does he use a... COMPUTER to type them up?? ** gasps from the audience **

Oh man. With all the small-minded idiots out there like these "critics" - it's no wonder why TRON bombed at the box office. Oh well, TRON was STILL the coolest thing I had ever seen at the time... and still is today!

Somehow, I find this mildly entertaining. It just goes to show how stupid some people can really be. Especially the first one. There are characters in movies that are a lot like him. Next thing you'd know, he'd start whipping holy water at us. Reminds me of an artical on manga that I just read for an essay. It was quite similar to this. In that article, a comic book shop keeper was accused of selling porn because the mother found Pokemon manga on the shelf. She got really carried away! She wrote nasty letters and so forth to get the comic book shop to stop selling manga. The funny part was, the church and a lot of people in that community was actually in support of the comic book store and were pro-manga. It was kinda funny.

Ebert has had annual Overlooked Movies Festivals for several years now. The first was in 1999, and he picked TRON for that one. His review - in which he gave the movie 4 out of 4 stars - can be found at http://www.ebertfest.com/one/tron_rev.htm.

The overall site is at http://www.ebertfest.com.

I'm writing in regards to Rex Reed's review (http://www.tron-sector.com/gallery/show.aspx?id=1678). In it, he states:
"As far as I'm concerned, computerized movies are a total disaster. Can they really be planning future movies made by robots in which computers will replace both conventional animation and live action."

I find it interesting, then, that I've found other reviews by him. For example, in his A.I. review (which he gives very high praises to) - http://www.observer.com/pages/story.asp?ID=4528 - he states:
"David is plunged into a nightmarish landscape of technical marvels, including a slag pit of discarded robot parts scavenged by Mechas searching for missing arms and limbs (for maximum authenticity, Mr. Spielberg employed real paraplegics to play the injured Mechas)"
Sorry, Rex, but it looks like real-life actors were replaced by digital actors. Why aren't you ripping on Spielberg?

Another one from A.I.:
"One of the most endearing characters in the film is a sarcastic talking teddy bear with a superhuman artificial intelligence of its own, and the seasoned voice of veteran actor Jack Angel, who acts as David’s wise companion and loyal sidekick throughout his adventures."
Hmm, sorry Rex, but it looks like you've fallen in love with a computer-generated character. Oh no, what is this world coming to???

And another:
"With A.I., Mr. Spielberg has produced one whale of an entertainment even the cynics are heralding as a filmmaking triumph."
Looks like you were a little short-sighted (and ignorant) when you reviewed Tron, Rex. Shouldn't we all be boycotting A.I., Rex? Why are you supporting a movie that uses so much computer-generated imagery?

And then Rex's review of I, Robot (http://www.nyobserver.com/pages/story.asp?ID=9322):
"For sci-fi fans, I, Robot, directed by Alex Proyas, has its distractions, but as cheerful and sassy as Will Smith is, he is upstaged mercilessly by the robots. They can be menacing, innocent, scary, guileless, blank-faced and creepy, all at the same time—-like a cabinet meeting in Crawford, Tex."
Hmm, digital actors upstaging real actors?? What is this world coming to?!!? Surely Rex isn't okay with A.I. and I, Robot. But yet he is. Hmm...

-----------
Those Tron reviews make me sick. Gotta love short-sidedness...

I wonder if the Movie "The Polar Express" having the voice of Tom Hanks is what Rex Reed was worried about.

How about posting positive reviews of Tron back in the day when it came out.

I recall reading some really good things about Tron the movie in Rolling Stone and in many other news papers and reviews when Tron the movie came out.

Yeah, that'd be cool to have -- if they're not already posted somewhere here in the Sector.

I remember Roger Ebert had really good thoughts about Tron.

Seeing Rex Reed's write-up just depressed me :P

I hear you. I think the thing that bothers me the most, though, is that many people decide whether or not they should see a movie based on the reviews. (I'm actually one of those people.)

So, since Tron is my favorite movie, I'm sad to know bad press didn't help its cause when it came out.

And short-sidedness at the time (very evident in Rex's review) even prevented it from being included in the Best Special Effects category.

I'll take it with a pinch (or a grain) of salt, but I wish Tron was more welcomed at the time.

That's the sad thing: people believe what they read. However, even the most cynical reviewer would agree; that there is nothing like Tron; you cannot compare it to anything. It was truly original. Sadly a lot of the reviewers (from 1982 +) didn't see it that way.
