Only Tim Allen's program might have a chance at keeping up with DaveTRON's posting speed.
Light Cycles might have more then just this guy's jet trail to be afraid of.
Enjoy,
Carl

Way cool!
Now THAT I have to see animated!
And very cool concept - what effect might the ripples have on the other players on the grid?
Yes, I'd really like to see that animated.
Great work as always, Carl!

Smooooooth!
I'd pimp around in one of those things ANY day!
I'd feel bad for the dudes in lightcycles getting bumped off the game grid, though!

mmm actually wwwmwww you brought up something interesting. Does physics play the same role in the digi world as it does in ours. For example since the craft is fluctuation space time its moving fast enough to experiance Lorentz Contractions (in a measurable degree), thus it would much fatter then it normally would appear (objects are contracted along the direction of motion). Also the craft would be experiance a doppler shift (change in color) and time dilation.
Now if we were in the cockpit, it would look like Star trek when they jump to warp....ahhh realtivity.
It does look spiffy though order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

What end of the color spectrum would it shift toward?

Hello Everyone,
Thank you for all the positive comments. Here are a few replies...

I want to see it animated too. At the moment there are two things standing in my way. One being rendering time. This one image took over a week to render. I'm sure I can cut that way down by turning off reflection and using a lower resolution and less AA for example. However the bigger obstacle at the moment is the wake you see above isn't a valid solution to the 2D Wave Equation. In fact it contains no time dependance at all. It's just a wave form that looks cool as a still image. In an animation if I were to just drag it along behind the flyer I think it'd look very dry. You guys want to see the ripples moving outward I image. I know how to fix that but it's been 15 years since I had a wave motion class. What I need is a solution I know I've seen before. Heck, it was probably a homework problem and I've probably gone through it's derivation before. To avoid brushing off some very rusty math skills I've been looking for the solution on the internet and I haven't found it yet. If this language means anything to any of you and you want to help... I'm looking for the solution to the 2D wave equation where the initial state is given by an infinate flat plane and the velocity of each point in that plane is given by a Dirac Delta function at t=0, r=0 (x=0,y=0). Think of it as watching the ripples head outwards from a single 'kick' in the center. If I remember correctly the solution isn't given in terms of sines and cosines typically but Bessel functions. POV-Ray I don't believe has the Bassel functions built into it but I think there are standard approximations out there for them that allow you to express them in terms of sines and cosines which are built into POV-Ray. Call this TRON math lesson #2 if you like.
A super position of many such solutions along the path the flyer takes would form a proper wake that could be animated... through probably very very slowly. I'm just itching to see the effect on the ripples when the flyer makes a turn for example.
TheReelTodd Wrote:And very cool concept - what effect might the ripples have on the other players on the grid? |
Out at the edge where the ripples are small I imagine a light cycle might just get bounced around a little bit. If a flyer were to buzz a cycle I could see it flipping and derezing.
Traahn Wrote:Also the craft would be experiance a doppler shift (change in color) and time dilation. | What end of the color spectrum would it shift toward? |
Depends on where the camera is. If the flyer were coming toward the camera it'd shift toward the blue end and if it were going away it'd shift toward the red end. If the camera were moving with the flyer you wouldn't see any effect.
That said I'm not really envisioning my flyer as moving THAT fast. Equate normal light cycles to motorcycles and my flyer is something closer to this:
I'm trying to break the sound barrier not the speed of light.
Enjoy,
Carl
P.S. Three replies in one. I'm kill my chances of catching up with DaveTRON aren't I?

The wave is very cool, but like you said, just having it follow the pod around would look rather dry.
So many video games employ a similar effect with the way characters and vehicles move through water, I'm surprised that a flowing wave plug-in does not exist for your 3D app. In fact, there are a number of simple (relatively speaking) flash animations that employ a kind of fluid wave as the mouse drags over it.
I'm kind of ignorant to this kind of thing, but I'm almost certain you should be able to find some kind of wave plug-in or routine that you can use instead of using home grown and complex mathematical equations.
I'm sure you'll come across the right solution in good time though Can't wait to see how it looks in motion too!

Oh, I'm sure there is more then one way to skin this cat. I used an isosurface to define the surface of the wake. It works from an equation and has the advantage that it's perfectly smooth.
I'm sure that is NOT the approach most would take though. I'm sure its easier to use a height field and generate a numerical solution for each point in the mesh for each frame outside POV-Ray. Not only would that be faster but it's a much simplier problem to solve. To me the drawback is that its a mesh so the surface will be made up of hundreds of triangles and no longer smooth. With the right density of triangles you shouldn't be able to tell a difference.
It's just that my math/physics background makes me want to be exact when I can be. That and I haven't played with height fields yet but I'm sure I will. As I think about it I'd have to approximate the solution for the isosurface anyways so in this case the height field might actually be more accurate too.
I'll come up with something that will look nice. It'll just take some time,

Thanks. "Tearing up the Grid" was a title I was thinking about for this one. In my mind all three of these were good:
"Tearing up the Grid"
"Making Waves"
and
"More Power"
I named the tread after the last one, but I like all three.
