Oh, heck yeah!

I picked up the box set that came in the big Cylon-head shaped box. To my delight it even came with a program, much bigger (not quite as long as legal paper, but wider) than the usual DVD booklet; it really reminds me of the programs you used to be able to buy at the movies back in the 1970's and early 1980's. I miss that part of going to the movies. Being able to take home more than the memory was always cool.

I love watching the OBG, there's just nothing like it... but with any luck, I'll also be watching Buck Rogers in the 25th Century this Christmas. It's not as good as BG, don't get me wrong, but I still enjoy watching it.

YEAH! I got the Cylon-shaped box too! It's so cool! If only the eye lit up and scanned back and forth... It's got the fold-out and episode guide inside... and something else I think. I can't remember now - I haven't had it out for a while. But it's COMING TO LIFE AGAIN real soon in my living room!

Yep - there’s just NOTHING like BSG!

As a kid, I didn't have any of the BSG toys, but I did have this cardboard Viper cockpit play set. I think I had to send in cereal coupons or UPCs to get it or something. It was cardboard, flimsy, and didn't last long, but it was cool to me and I LOVED playing with it! Me and some friends would get together and pretend we were in heated battles with the Cylons in our cardboard cockpits!

I know they did a lot of "cookie cutter" space battles (using the same clips over and over) but they were so damn cool! Even seeing them today - you can't say that they weren't action packed! Even with all of today's beautiful technology and special effects, those 30-year-old battle scenes STILL hold their own TODAY in my opinion! They employed visuals, ship choreography, and cool moves that no one does anymore. They took what they had to work with and make it WORK so well!

I used to watch Buck Rodgers too. "Be-de-be-de-be-de-be Hey Buck!" I didn't like it nearly as much as BSG, in fact I kind of always hoped it would rise to the level of "wow" that BSG was, but in my opinion it never did. It was a fun show though and I enjoyed watching it back in the day. How long did that one last - was it three seasons? I remember...um... damn, I forget her name, but she went on to co-star in Silver Spoons after Buck Rodgers ended. But poor, poor Twiki though - he just kind of faded away in to robot oblivion, never landing a lead role again

Mmmm, 80's era Erin Gray. Mmmmmmmmmmm. Spandex disco spacesuit. Mmmmmmmm.

Still pretty good looking these days.

Remember Veronica Hamel from Hill Street Blues?

Just saw her on something the other day. Used to be kinda hot, now a train wreck.

Erin Grey as Colonel Wilma Deering... oh yeah, that's the ticket. Worth the 500 year sleep!

And how about Pamela Hensley as Princess Ardala? Man, I don't know how Buck resisted; guess he didn't want to have to give up Wilma. Lucky guy!

Oh I still think the BSG space battles are great! Yeah, they reused the same clips over and over for budgetary reasons. But as you said TheReelTodd, they did cool moves no one else has done before or since, and I too think they still hold up well.

BTW, glad you got the Cylon-head box! That thing is sooo cool!

As for my man Twiki, voiced to perfection by the one and only Mel Blanc, HE ROCKED!

My absolute favorite Twiki quote?

"Bidi-bidi-bidi Eat lead, sucker!"

I still get a big grin when I hear it!

Come to think of it, a Twiki-head box would've been great for the Buck Rodgers release.

Hey, do you remember that cool episode in which Buster Crabbe - the original Buck Rogers and Flash Gorden - guest starred? How cool was that?

Ah, the 70's. Time to break out my copies of Logan's Run and Battle Beyond the Stars... O.K., BBtS came out in 1980 but it's a very 70's movie, and anyway, it had Sybil Danning as Saint Exmin... WOW!abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

YES - that's her!

Really? She's still lookin' good these days? She was quite the Buck Rodgers hottie as I recall!

MutoidMan Wrote:...As for my man Twiki, voiced to perfection by the one and only Mel Blanc, HE ROCKED!

I never realized Twiki's voice was Bel Blanc. Now that you mention it, I can make the connection. He was such a master of vocal characterizations!

Great - now my mind is mixing up Mel Blanc characters. Just a moment ago, my brain played a fictitious sound byte in the voice of Twiki but acting like Bugs Bunny: "De-be-de-be-de-be-de - aaaaaaaa what's up Buck?" (then starts chewing carrot) Ok, maybe that was funnier in my mind as it popped in there.

MutoidMan Wrote:...Hey, do you remember that cool episode in which Buster Crabbe - the original Buck Rogers and Flash Gorden - guest starred? How cool was that?

You know - I have a vague memory of that being talked about, but I have no memory of that episode just by that reference alone. I might remember the episode if I heard a plot summary or saw some shots of it. But when I was a kid, I was pretty much oblivious to who was who in terms of guest stars and all. For me - it (TV shows in general) was all about the characters and enjoying the show. I didn't even know Fred Astaire guess starred on BSG until watching my BSG DVD set and seeing his name, and then the cast talking about his appearance. As a kid - I remember that episode clearly, but I had no idea he was a famous dancing actor at the time.

"Battle Beyond the Stars"

I'm ashamed to admit this... but I never actually saw this. How could it have slipped through my sci-fi loving grip? I just read a quick blurb about it on the internet... DEFINATELY going to have to check this one out. They used the word "quirky" - I LOVE quirky, or anything with a good odd-factor to it. And there were some pretty nice looking hotties in the photos too

Thanks, Qix77! Not a birthday thread though, just a "RezDay" thread. I made up the term a few weeks back - it means the day one first digitized themselves in to TRON-Sector and created their account.

Your RezDay is 03/31/2002 - so in a few months, YOU will be celebrating your RezDay in your own (hopefully 80's laced) thread! With people like MutoidMan and myself, we'll throw plenty of 80's at ya I'm sure!

And yes, I remember The Reflex very well... in fact I'm now singing it in my head! "Bieieieieieie time don't loose it!"

Dude! Battle Beyond The Stars - John Boy vs The Evil Aliens! Yep, richard Thomas, our very own John Boy Walton commands a spaceship that looks like a flying bustline and works with a rag tag crew of misfits to defeat John Saxon (I think) and his marauders. I gotta whip up copy of this to watch. It's been a while, and I am jonesing for it now.

You know what's odd that I remember of Buck Rogers from being a kid? When he goes back to Old Chicago, and it's some kind of nuclear wasteland, to visit the graves of his parents. I was so sad for him. And then those strange new feelings Erin Grey in her tight fitting outfits brought to me. Welcome to puberty!

You can get Battle Beyond the Stars from most any Best Buy for $14.99 on Roger Corman Classics.

In the commentary, they talk about how James Cameron, yes the James Cameron, cut his teeth in the movie business working for Roger Corman. You can attribute the high quality of the ship models to Cameron, who was the art director on BBtS.

In fact, Cameron made BBtS just before Terminator. In the Terminator commentary, Cameron basically says that he learned all about making the most of a little money from Corman, the master of the quality low budget movie, and that helped make Terminator possible.

You need to see this movie TheReelTodd, it's a lot of fun and very cool!

And it has an all-star cast featuring Richard Thomas as Shad, the novice hero, George Peppard as Cowboy, a reluctant hero from Earth (the planet no one has ever heard of), Robert Vaughn as Gelt, the bad-ass mercenary, Sybil Danning as Saint Exmin, the beautiful buxom warrior and John Saxon as Sador, the evil guy bent on ruling the universe!

Yeah, this is a classic in my book.

Thanks for the "Battle Beyond the Stars" info! I am definitely going to check this out!

It sounds VERY cool.

I was planning on just renting it, but it seems that those who have seen it enjoy it again and again, so it might be a good one to add to the collection. For only $15.00 - why not?

Well, my wife and I went to a Chinese Auction (a.k.a. Tricky Tray, a.k.a. Penny Sale) over the weekend, and for the first time ever I won the 50-50!

The prize was $170.00; not enough to retire on but more than enough to go out for a nice dinner and to pick up my copy of the Buck Rogers in the 24th Century box set!

This is a great set, with only a couple of weak points.

One is that while it's great that the theatrical pilot (which I haven't seen since I saw it in the theater) is included, there is at least one scene that was added for the television version of the pilot (from which the racier scenes of the theatrical version were cut) that serves to bridge the pilot and the series which isn't here. But, it's not that big a deal.

The other weak point is that there is practically nothing in the way of extras.

However, the transfers are excellent. The picture is razor sharp, and the sound is terrific.

Yeah, this show suffers from the same repititous combat sequences as BSG does, but that doesn't bother me, as the combat sequences are good, and I've always liked the Earth Defense Directorate fighters and the other ship designs of this show.

One thing that I find interesting is that they use stargates for intersystem travel. Not an SG-1-type stargate, but a gate to "warp space" (I think that's what it's called) comprised of four artificial stars arranged in a diamond shape. When you approach the gate a "door" to warp space is opened between the stars, and another gate is used to exit warp space.

This arrangement is much like the hyperspace jump gates from Babylon 5, but predates them by about 15 years. It makes me wonder if there was any influence there. Then there is the term 'stargate' itself. I have to wonder if that had any influence on the Stargate movie.

After having watched most of the first DVD, I'm eager to watch the other four. Heck, I'm still a couple of DVD's away from seeing Julie Newmar as the War Witch from another dimension!

Hey MutoidMan - gongrats on your Chinese Auction win!

So you've picked up the Buck Rogers box set, eh?

Man - my memory on that show is really sketchy. I have no memory at all of the opening show... or even a theatrical release of the opening show?

I do remember the 4 stars in a diamond-like shape used as a warp gate. Ships would be cleared for passage and then pass through in a bright flash of light if memory serves. They did have to get clearance, right? Like I said - sketchy memories

A ship passing trough the warp gate was featured in the intro too, right?

As for the space battles, I always thought they kind of lacked the great action elements seen in the BSG battles... but I admit I can really only remember a few feint memories of any space battles from BR. I remember Hawk's ship looked like a giant falcon, and had talons "designed to rip in to and tear" whatever it grabs on to, right? I remember an episode where Hawk's ship grabbed on to Buck's ship, who had his loved inside with him (Hawk's love) and the talon pierced her shoulder and the had to land the ships together because the talons could not be disengaged. Or something like that. Did I mention sketchy memories?

I just did a little web searching on Buck Rogers and saw MANY things I had forgotten completely! Like Crichton the taller, skinny robot! He was always kind of a nag, right? I thought he was cool though. After seeing his picture, I have a very vague memory of Gary Coleman being in an episode. I was a big Diff'rent Strokes fan in the late 70's and thought it was cool he was on the show... and yet cheesy at the same time. Can't explain that better - sorry. Jack Palance? Haaaaaa! He was on an episode? How cool is that! As a kid, I had no idea who most of the guest stars were, but looking back, I'm surprised to see that I know who almost all of them are and other shows/films they were in! Roddy McDowall - I probably saw the episode he was in (though I can't remember a thing) but never knew he was my favorite chimp in another film I saw at a very young age!

Well man - enjoy the set! It sounds like it has (almost) everything you would have liked to see there - well, mainly the crisp and clean presentation of the show itself

Oh yeah, I saw it in the theater. I had the illustrated story book version of the movie too. I remember being slightly disappointed that the illustrators substituted an F-111 Aardvark for Buck's one-man shuttle.

Yes, as I kid I was already an avid aircraft buff, and I followed the Space Shuttle ALTs (Approach and Landing Tests) that NASA conducted in the late 1970's with great interest.

TheReelTodd Wrote:I do remember the 4 stars in a diamond-like shape used as a warp gate. Ships would be cleared for passage and then pass through in a bright flash of light if memory serves. They did have to get clearance, right? Like I said - sketchy memories

No, they didn't have to get clearance for passage.

The stars would grow very bright and a warp sound effect would signal the opening of the gate, while a thunderbolt sound would signal the closing of a gate after exiting.

TheReelTodd Wrote:A ship passing trough the warp gate was featured in the intro too, right?

Not that I recall, but I haven't gotten to the second season yet. Maybe it was in that intro.

You got the Hawk incident right.

The feeling of combat was a little different, mostly because the music is different. The BSG music was an orchestral type with emphasis on strings, while the Buck Rogers music was more high-energy rock type with emphasis on horns, drums and guitar.

Outside of the theatrical pilot, the sound effects for the ships and lasers were almost identical to the BSG sounf effects, though I do profess a preference for the sound the Earth Defence Directorate fighter's engines make over the Viper engines; more of a growl, less of a whine. Actually, now that I think about it, it may sound just like or very close to what the Cylon Raider sounds like.

I was never too thrilled with Chrichton, but he was okay sometimes.

God help me, I actually liked Gary Coleman as Hieronymus Fox, the genius kid from the 20th century. It goes
