Tron featured on Black Hole DVD

on Tuesday, August, 03, 2004 6:27 PM
I just picked up my other favorite Disney sci-fi film, The Black Hole, and was pleased to see Harrison Ellenshaw discussing the vfx for the film and mentioning Tron!

They show a few clips from Tron as he discusses how The Black Hole was the last film from Disney's studios to use old-school vfx techniques and how Tron ushered in a new era of effects.

It's a nice mention, and very surprising.

The DVD is nice, too! The Black Hole has finally been given an anamorphic widescreen transfer and includes 5.1 surround (which is pretty darn good) along with the original overture featured when you first play the film and the film's extended trailer (which shows WAAAAYYY too much of the film!). The picture is the best the film will probably ever look, so while it's grainy, consider the fact that it's 25 years old and the source material is probably not the best!

All in all, a nice buy for $15.99 at Circuit City!

And I still dig V.I.N.Cent and Maximillian!

I plan on getting it, which means I gotta sell off my Anchor Bay copy. Nice price too, I better get over to Circuit City. Can you tell us some of the differences between the Disney release versus the Anchor Bay.

Well, the anamorphic transfer is the biggest thing.

It's not just some letterboxed version. It's now in a proper format.

The picture is better. The blacks are MUCH more solid. There is still grain, but I don't think it's as bad as the Anchor Bay copy.

That's about it. The behind-the-scenes of the vfx is added, but it still has the extended trailer (3:24 minutes) like the previous Anchor Bay release.

Still no commentary, which is sad as I'd love to hear what the folks involved would have to say in retrospect. The film was a flop, but it was nominated for the Academy Award for best visual effects in 1979. It lost to Alien, I believe.

All in all, for $16 a Black Hole fan can do no wrong in adding this DVD to their collection!

I personally would love a CD of the soundtrack to be released too. The Black Hole soundtrack is my favorite of John Barry's non-Bond soundwork.

I wish the music for the film would be re-released. i would not mind seeing Disnye remake this. With the special effects today who knows. the should make a sequel and have a crew looking for what happened to the palamino survivors.

I was hopeing for a cd release similar to the TRON cd release coinciding with the DVD release. Also, did you know that MECO (disco version of Star Wars fame) released a version of the main theme from Black Hole w/ sound effects from the movie? It is on the "Music from Star trek and The Black Hole" album(yes, album) Not on CD.

Just bought the DVD. The Featurette is fair. I would have loved to see more poeple involved with the production, but it's better than nothing. Nice reference to TRON. I will also keep my Anchor Bay copy for the stills gallery. Anyone know of a Black Hole website, or website dedicated to Disney SciFI?

Yeah, I got a copy off EBAY. I am happy with it, but I was hoping it would be a bit more feature rich than the Anchor Bay copy. Looks like I'll be keeping my Anchor Bay copy too.
Anyone here going to get "Watcher in The Woods". I hear there was alot of heartache between Disney and Anchor Bay for release.
