I was born in Thirteenuary 13th, 1313, in the 13th hospital of the 13th state, in the 13th country, on the 13th planet, in the 13th system, in the 13th galaxy, in the 13th 13iverse!!!
I'm the most unlucky person on the planet!!!! 
No seriously I was born May 11. I'll be turning 13 in 2006.

Back in history long before paganism, that would have been something with reason. (signs were used for agriculture). So it was possible that you learn how to fuction reasonably by using numbers, ect instead of stars, and written mapping.
But dont get me wrong, I know the stars are not man made, and all that was used for was to have a constant, where the time of year was known using the position of objects in the sky, and ground.
Now, you see what people do with thier imagination.. it's been used for brighter things... hehe
