The Trouble with Trolls

on Friday, June, 11, 2004 8:02 PM
Trolls are deceptive, malicious sociopaths that have their small, pathetic, little minds focused on one thing and one thing alone – to irritate, anger, get under people's skin, and enjoy the negative reaction from the good people who populate an on-line community.

Sadly people almost always fall for their little tricks, and only validate their malicious messages by firing back at them.

When you feed a troll, no matter what you say is greeted with excitement and satisfaction. Acknowledging the pests by responding, ensures that they will stick around for a duration lasting no less than the time in which they can continue to anger people in to reacting to their taunts.

Trolls know how to push buttons. Respond to their loaded jeers, and they'll quickly figure out how best to anger you. Don't let them sucker you in to feeding them personal information about yourself. The more you respond, the more they know how to push your buttons and anger you most effectively. And the angrier they can make you, the more they get off on it.

Getting rid of a troll is simple.

Just ignore them, period.

Say nothing. Do not respond at all. Report them privately to admins and moderators, and make others aware of them, but do not acknowledge their existence in a public forum.

When a troll fails to get a reaction from people, they've lost the game they set out to play. They'll go somewhere else to try and piss off other unsuspecting people.

Trolls may stick around for a while and keep chiseling away with profanities and other insults in an effort to gain a reaction. But if continuously ignored, they will soon leave.

Take a few minutes and read through this. If you're pressed for time, just skip down to the "What is a troll?" and "The Game of Trolling" portions. Though dealing more with newsgroup trolls, the concept is well detailed there. It's an interesting read.

Here at TRON-Sector trolls don't last very long. It's easy to track their movements because we have good admins and mods who put a quick end to their malice.

But it's not always easy to track them in non-password authenticated on-line communities that aren't monitored often. Game servers can be an easy troll target. Stick to what I said - IGNORE THEM and they will leave a whole lot sooner than if you try to exchange insults with them.

I think I have shared this page with y'all before, but after that message it seems appropriate to share it again.

*Giggles* I remember that page! It's actually kinda funny. We were speaking about this one at another forum called BakaNeko one time.

DaveTRON - I read several of those Flame Warrior personalities in the page you posted.

Oh man - what a great read! I've encountered almost all of those types in various boards!

And they're almost always predictable once you've read a few of their posts!

Funny how predictable people can be... even myself sometimes

But that was definitely a good read.

I think they fell short on the "troll" part though. Trolls can be very harmful to an on-line community, at least when people take their bate.order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pill

Someone told me once I am part Admin and Archivist and I think I have a small dose of Nanny too.

I am curious what the rest of you think your types are?

I believe that Admins always had a touch of "Nanny" mixed in. As for what I think, I think I may be part Admin and part Kung-Fu Master.

Hmmm... I don't think I really fall into any of those lists.

Just kinda the "odd nutball that never seems to leave!"

Well, any good Admin has to do what an Admin has to do. So, I'm sure you're bound to fall in to some of those Admin categories by nature. You kind of have to.

These forums are troll-free, so Nanny, or Archivist or whatever - you and the other Admins keep it fun here

I just wish someone could do the same for the light cycle game servers.
