just read this article on gamespot, and well, let it speak for itself:

has Nintendo gone nuts? or have they got themselves a brilliant idea?

Well, I think they're nuts. But that's based on their decisions over the past several years, not just the ?DS?.
It seems to me (not that I'd know, mind you) that they have made some pretty bad decisions.
With SEGA gone, Sony doing very well and Microsoft building a following, I think we may be looking at the demise of the "original" consol companies.
(please bear in mind that this stuff is all "IMHO"!)

"Original" Console companies?
heh. Yer showing yer age
Pong, Odyssey 2000, Atari 2600/5200/7800/etc, Intellivision, Colecovision, Vectrex(sp) and a few others all existed before the NES.
The NES *is* credited for reviving the console market in the late 80s, after the 'crash' of video games years before. Atari is still around, though in name only.
Let's just hope the DS isn't another VisualBoywhere to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

Yeah, I was a little young during the actual "original" console craze (being only 29 now). I do remember my atari 2600 and 7800s. I also had a Coleco something or other...
I remember Pac Man, Pole Position, Yars Revenge and many others fondly. I just feel (again, prob. due to my age) that the whole thing never really took off until the NES and Sega Master System came out.
It's hard to imagine, in another 10 or so years, my kids saying "Oh yeah, I remember that PS2! Man talk about old school graphics!"
I do have a soft spot for Nintendo, though. And in a way I would like to see them back on top in the "console wars". But even if you ignore the VirtualBoy and the 30 different versions of the Game Boy you can get, they just don't seem to be going in the right direction.
While the PS2 came out with backwards compatibility so you could play all your PS1 games, and both the PS2 and Xbox could double as DVD players for those that didn't already have one, Nintendos Game Cube has odd sized cds and offers nothing as far as extras.
Now, I'm all for "dedicated" game machines, don't get me wrong. To me, that's the reason to get a console system in the first place. To see how well game systems work when marketed as "multimedia devices", see 3DO. But Nintendo just seems to be going down the wrong road. And I can't really say why I feel that way, I just do...
Just to show I'm not biased to any particular game co., here's a list of my systems:
NES
Super Nintendo
Nintendo 64
3DO
TurboGrafx 16
PS2
And at one point or another, I've also had:
Sega Master System
Sega Genesis / 32x / sega cd
Sega Saturn
Sega Dreamcast
Atari Jaguar
PS1
So what's the point of all this? I don't really remember, but it made perfect sense when I started typing!
Oh, well. Here's to all the systems that didn't make the cut!! They all had their good points (well, meybe not the Jaguar...), and everyone has their favorite.
Ok, I'll stop now.
*BTW, Hi Auric! Some of the long termers said you were MIA.*
Ok, now I'll really stop!

some of the people had some interesting opinions of the "DS"... if ya like try here:

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6086914/p-4.html

as for me, I think Nintendo just won't be able to make it with this one.
it would be nice if it did do well, but I can only hope...
...and buy one myself, but that's not my point.

You know - I have a GameCube... which I have not added any new games to since 2002's Metroid Prime.
Many new games have come out... but don't really interest me at all. I see commercials for XBox and PS2 games and wonder why did I opt for the GameCube? Nintendo seems so dry these days.
I could just get another system... but I really don't feel like adding multiple systems to an already cluttered space in my home.
Yeah - Nintendo seems very dry. They were once the great video game force to be reckoned with... and now seem to offer uninteresting games and a new hand-held system that seems very blah. I be surprised if it makes money. With the right marketing campaign it might, but I have no interest in it.
Anyone else have a GameCube that has turned in to a dust-collector?

Nope, but I've got a GBASP which I haven't played with lately due to very few games I have and uh, homework and too many shiny games for my PS2.

Well, I don't have a Game Cube, but on a positive note for the big N, I do still play the 64 from time to time.
The biggest reason being Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. But I still play Mario 64, Doom 64 and Episode one racers, too.
I never got a GC because as soon as I found out the PS2 would play PS1 games I knew it was the system I would get. Plus, I had become quite a PS fan over the previous few years.
Now that I think about it though, I haven't really gotten any new games for any system sience GTA: VC... Even my PS2 is collecting some dust. Spending too much time at this PC! 3DO! Rocking little system despite how expensive it was. We played Twisted the Game Show ALL the time. It also has the best version of Star Control II ever made... still playable to this day.

I'm much more of an oldschooler myself over here. I still have my Turbo Duo/Turbo Express system from back in 1991. Part of the Turbo Gaphx 16 (PC engine) line up. Talk about exspensive $300 for the Turbo Express back in the day. I still love that little guy. I guess video games just aren't the way they used to be as I rember from my childhood. Nintendo & My Pc engine are my favorite.

Haaaaa - I've actually been playing my N64 again recently too! I played another round of Zelda "Ocarina of Time" a few months ago, and just last week, picked up and started playing "Perfect Dark" again. Those were probably the best two games for that system (to me, anyway). The frame rate sucks on PD, and the graphics are dated, but that game has awesome game play and I enjoy playing it again.
But the big N has definitely been a disappointment in recent years.
I'm not sure I'll be getting another (console) system period, until they start offering more immerseful experiences. I'm tired of the graphics getting beefed up - they can do that forever and not interest me much more by it.
The technology exists already. They can make games that really immerse the player by putting them (practically) right in the 3D environment via 3D goggles similar to the ones NASA is currently using to view the Mars rovers imagery. These devices can be mass-produced at a cost effective level. I don't understand why games aren't going (true) 3D. It's still all just happening on a FLAT screen. It doesn't need to be this way.
Well, that's my take on it anyway. Honestly, before the recent systems came about, I really thought this generation of consoles would be the ones that utilized this technology. Sadly, I don't even think the next generation will either. BLAH!

You bring up some very good points, TheReelTodd. Not that I don't like the PS2, it and the Xbox are impressive. But it seems (to me at least) that the console market is somewhat stagnating .
However, at the same time as I would say it (the console market) needs something new and exciting to stir things up, most of my favorite games are older, out of date ones! The companies attempts at the "new and exciting" hardware seems to fail, in general. (again, the Vboy and prob. this new DS being good examples)
Perhaps part of this is due to the PC game market? Look at GTA: VC. I have it for both the PC and PS2, and the PS version can't compare to the pc version. And my PC isn't even that powerfull, all in all. Still, the PC version excells in every aspect except for the difficult key board driving, which wouldn't be an issue if I would just get a controller. And I haven't seen anything as good as TRON 2.0 on the consoles .
Oh, well. They seem to know what they are doing, because their sales are plenty good! Maybe we will get to see something really good with the next round of systems. Maybe not. But the bulk of the gamers out there, myself included, will no doubt buy one of them. Don't you wish your corruption was hot like me? |
