The merchandising of video games is an iffy proposition; no matter how much that Pac-Man lunchbox is worth on Ebay today, they still had to chuck a few tons of 'em into the scrapyard back in the 80's.

With that said, I think that clever and interesting licensed products probably sell pretty well, perhaps even regardless of license. So here are some ideas off the top of my head - in other words, at random, no guarantees of sanity made - for officially licensed stuff from TRON 2.0:

1. fCon blank CDs. Put the fCon logo on the box and on the CDs. Include the TRON 2.0 license info on the back of the box, of course, but otherwise, pretty cool and probably not at all expensive to make.

2. ENCOM blank CDs. Same deal; ENCOM logo on box and CD. Make it the ENCOM logo from the 80's.

3. TRON 2.0 blank CDs. Put Jet's disk image on the CDs themselves. And hey, for all of these blank-CD ideas, include a CD with the single-player TRON 2.0 demo.

4. ENCOM and fCon and TRON 2.0 mousepads. Package 'em in a three-pack; I'd buy it!

5. Here's one that's kind of complex: get some Java programmers to come up with nine or ten fun Tron-related mini-games (and really make sure that the art direction is as tight as TRON 2.0). Then package it in a CD case with an optical-illusion cover; turned frontwise, it's the ENCOM Data Management Suite, but when you move the CD case in front of your eyes, you see that it's really the TRON Mini-Game pack (insert cleverl canonical title here). The idea would be that the TRON material was bursting out of the ENCOM box. I can't remember the word for the kind of effect I mean, but you'd all know it if you saw it.

6. Here's a potentially expensive little item: TRON T-shirts with a full TRON pattern printed upon them. I bet this already exists at Disney's theme parks.

Well, my thought is that since TRON 2.0 hasn't had much in the way of supplimental marketing (one line of four action figures, with maybe deluxe versions later this year, is all I've heard about), what sort of things could I think of that would be likely to (A): advertise TRON 2.0 in a cool and attractive way, and (B): not cost a blue fortune, either to develop or to manufacture.

Some things - TRON 2.0 posters, mousepads, pens, pencils, tchotchkes like might have been given away at the BVE booth at E3 - go without saying, I think. I'm trying to think of cool stuff for them to offer for sale to us, the TRON 2.0 fan base, that isn't boring or a (ahem) resource hog.

Since TRON 2.0 fans are probably a heavily computer-literate demographic, (and TRON itself is intrinsically computer-related), it seems to me that creating a line of promotional merchandise that caters to both angles in a cool, inside-joke way, might be very successful. I mean, it's one thing to have a TRON 2.0 mousepad on your desk at work, but how cool would an ENCOM or fCon mousepad be? Only fellow TRON-fans would get the joke, but that's part of the appeal. Emphasizing the plot elements (ENCOM instead of TRON 2.0) enhances immersabilty.

If I were doing marketing at BVE, I'd work with an existing manufacturer to create a full line of ENCOM computer supplies - disks, CDs, mousepads, screensavers, headphones, maybe even cables and keyboards and such. "The ENCOM New Hire Desk Accessory Kit", complete with a letter of welcome from Kevin Flynn (get Steven Lisberger to write all the supporting text).

Lets see as for merchandising for Tron 2.0 game or possible movie. I think someone had already said mousepad, and coffe cups. How about one of those coffe cups for tron when you put something hot in the mug the image changes on the side of the cup and the same thing for anything cold. I suppose you can do that for the thermoses as well. A tron Frisebee, the original and the updates one from the 2.0 game. I think well all know that 88MPH company up here in Quebec is developing the comic book series of Tron 2.0.

The original Flynnshirts from the original Movie. Also the new tron shirts for the game, Watches, Pens & Pencils, Note pads, Sticky notes, License plates where applicable I I think they alloqw it up here in Canada as well. But not as a permanent license to register your car with. Tron Seat Covers, Tron mud guards for inside the car/truck, Same thing for the outside of the car/truck, Tron CUps saucers, glasses.
