Ok, so here's where I'm going w/ this. Disney just purchased Lucasfilm for $4B, now they have the Star Wars franchise. Do you think the beancounters at Disney will ever greenlight another Tron film / project when they know that making ANY Star Wars project will be more profitable. Or, do you think the addition of the Star Wars franchise will strengthen Disney's financial position allowing them to make more Tron projects?

I hope it is the latter but I am afraid Disney now has what they always wanted, a live-action sci-fi juggernaut. Something I feel they always wanted Tron to be, but never felt Tron was.

I'm a little down in the dumps on this one, so cheer me up a bit and give me your thoughts.

The only thing I can surmise is that Disney wants to separate "TRON" from anything that is too kiddified, perhaps? Even with "Uprising" being animated, it's not written for kids.

It does seem strange tho as I would imagine a classic lightcycle would have worked great at some point in the film.

Like I said in the other thread Disney own Lucasfilm but this has no effect on Disney's own projects. Lucasfilm will operate as its own entity as it always has, it just not has the extra money pot of Disney to pull from. But as any deal Disney will also get a cut of any profits made from Lucasfilm which if anything would probably allow Disney to fund more projects that may not be massive money makers (Tron)

I liken it to Galaxy Rangers - excellent voice cast, stellar writing, soundtrack that deserves to rattle your car windows...

MUCH too Dark and Edgy for a cartoon ostensibly aimed for younglings. GR had things like one of the good guys being the last product of a super soldier army, and the only one who remained loyal to his creators...who only spared his life so he could hunt down and kill his "siblings." (Again, we're talking slavery, on the part of the GOOD GUYS). It had several instances of genocide, an on-screen body count on par with Star Trek: The Next Generation, a situation where one of the Rangers shagged an attractive female crime boss, and a scene where the most innocent interpretation ends with a nasty on-screen mind-rape, with Word of God and some Fanon saying the villainess in question wasn't past the other kind.

Now, we get Uprising:

When a character who was the textbook definition of Lawful Good through the first film and Kingdom Hearts tries to kill his apprentice several times because the apprentice was trying to talk him out of a suicidal revenge mission? When the sheer amount of shattered voxels on the floor suggest scenes straight out of a Tarantino flick as soon as you add up that those are the same as blood and body parts? We've crossed some lines here. Not saying it's a bad thing, but back in 1986, no one knew what to do with the Rangers as their themes and style clashed hard with the toy ad toons. As a result, I know my station (KSTW) put it on at 4am! I'm wondering if Disney has put it at the strange hours partly because they realized that the series is more an Adult Swim than kiddie pool.

Japanense anime have kiddie shows as well as those geared towards older teens and adults. And how long did it take for that to gain some popularity at least in the United States? At least in the late 1980s. (Not referring to Speed Racer or Battle of the Planets which came out in the 1970s.) However some of those series were cancelled when they were aired too especially when local networks aired them when aired for the later afternoon hours where they would be viewed for children even when their content was anything but.

Alot of people still equate animation equals kids. Shouldn't animation be viewed as simply another form of story-telling? As it's been previously compared to any anime from a Saturday night/Sunday morning Adult Swim (or even some animation aired on the G4 network).

I would hope it would depend on just how Disney wishes to go ahead. Would be a far too interesting storyline for them not to pass up. While the content of Uprising may be a reason for the time-switch I don't see why they would have to move it to as late as they they did. If anything, to me. TRON: Uprising takes some cues from ancient Rome when it was already in the thralls of internal decay and downfall. The gladiatorial death "games" are certainly an example. There are others of course. But would be a shame to not explore the world and society Uprising has to offer and how some try to change it for the better.

Absolutely. Especially since I'm willing to bet they picked animation NOT so much to make it kid-oriented, as to not have to de-age Bruce.

I learned to appreciate anime when my ex's brother made me watch a bunch of it. It's a legit medium if you ask me.
